Welcome to the Art Room website. My name is Mary Lou Massucco.
I have been teaching art at BFMS since 1976. I started working at the Middle School in 1974 as an aide where I worked in Special Education and the art room. After receiving my certification in art , I continued to teach art in the room which had been previously used as the "auto shop" at the old high school. After 38 years in that room, we moved the art room to the old library on second floor when the renovations were complete. We now have a beautiful room filled with sunshine and a hall gallery lined with bulletin boards. Our old cast iron enamel sink, which is 5 feet long, happily made it through the renovations to the new art room!!!
I grew up in Bellows Falls and graduated from Bellows Falls High School; I then graduated from UVM in 1973 with a BS in Home Economics. I have continued my education throughout the years by taking art classes at Castleton State College, Keene State College, Bennington College, Massachusetts College of Art, and University of Vermont. I have also participated in many workshops through the district and at various art centers including Fletcher Farm, Main Street Arts, The Vault, and Vermont Art Teachers Association to name a few. I have displayed student work in the community and at the New England Middle School conference where I have been a presenter. Most recently, I completed my Masters Degree at UVM where I studied from 2007- 2011 with the Vermont Mathematics Initiative. It was through this program that I studied extensively how math is taught in grades K-8. To complete this work, I finished 36 graduate credits in math. This knowledge has helped me to incorporate more connections of math to art in the classroom. I am also a gardener (UVM Master Gardener 1994), and I love to paint portraits and work with papier mache.
In the art room, students continue to draw, paint and sculpt in a program that is challenging and rewarding. Students create works of art that demonstrate knowledge in the elements of design. Art through the ages and from around the world inspire my students as we look at what has been created by various cultures. Students also share their work as we look critically at what makes art and how to talk about works of art. Students are asked to write about experiences in art as we work to improve writing skills across all content areas.
